Yuan Song (b. 1992) creates intricate sculptures using items from everyday life. The objects that the artist chooses – shards of glass, mirrors, neon lights, stainless steel pipes and other industrial materials – are consumed in large quantities by the public without being paid any special attention. They also share similar characteristics; often their appearance is shiny, or have a reflective quality, but they are inexpensive, mass-produced objects.

Yuan Song stitches these items together into a combination of contradictory objects that are seemingly unrelated, and yet his sculptures form a new kind of order, as the random consumer goods form a reflection the various characteristics of our contemporary living environment. His mirror-filled light boxes and assemblages present a dazzling, maze-like visual landscape to the viewer, a metaphor for life in today’s world.
